cool cats’ cafe

Cafe & Residence | London | UK
For – private client
Role – Design Architect (in conjunction with TIA)
Value – c.£450K

The renovation and conversion of an existing C19 end terrace to Cool Cats' Cafe; a street level café/bar and residence over. From inception this project sort to engage the local community, this process is recorded on their website.

Working in conjunction with London based Twist In Architecture (TIA), we worked on the design development and technical design. The existing building was derelict and unstable. In order to retain the exterior historic fabric an ambitious new internal structural steel frame was inserted enabling the upper flat to be tailored to modern living. A contemporary roof top extension was then added to the rear, with extensive glazing allowing natural light and taking advantage of the high level views. The new shop front announces the new life of the café to the neighborhood, continuing the language of slender expressed steel and large areas of glass used on the rear roof extension. The frontage discreetly incorporates an awning, a roller shutter and large sliding windows to allow the café to spill onto the street.

Kind thanks to TIA for the use of their photographs.
